Holy Monastery of Askitis in Goumero




It is located close to Goumero. It is an abandoned monastery, probably of byzantine times, dedicated to Virgin Mary. According to a local myth, there lived an ascetic who was chased by the local people, because they thought he was a boar. Τhe chase led them to the place where later the monastery were to built. There they found an illustration of Virgin Mary holding an infant. In that place, where two mountains are joined forming a canyon, the monastery was built. It is abandoned for nearly 50 years.
